Tomoe, de son nom complet Tomoe Gozen, est une femme samouraï japonaise du XIIe-XIIIe siècle.
Alors qu’à l’époque, les femmes combattent toujours avec un naginata (lance avec une grande lame au bout), Tomoe manie le sabre, l’arc et monte à cheval comme les hommes. Respectée des hommes, elle combat au côté de son amant Minamoto no Yoshinaka en tant que général.

Lors de la bataille d’Awazu en 1184, ils subissent une grosse défaite qui entraîne la mort de Yoshinaka. Tomoe, à la demande de ce dernier, s’enfuit du champs de bataille avec la tête de son amant.

On ne sait pas ce qu’elle devient par la suite. Certains prétendent qu’elle se jetta dans la mer avec la tête de son amant, d’autres qu’elle se retira dans un temple bouddhiste ou qu’elle se serait mariée...
